Prayers for Grief

Simple Buddhist prayers for grief — words to hold when loss leaves you without any.

Grief is not a problem to solve. It is love with nowhere to go.

In Buddhism, we don’t pray for grief to end quickly. We pray for the tenderness to carry it — and the knowledge that we don’t have to carry it alone.

Here are three simple prayers for when loss is near.

For yourself:

May I be gentle with myself in this pain. May I grieve without shame. May I find my way through, one breath at a time.

For someone you love:

May your sorrow be witnessed. May you feel less alone in your loss. May love find you even here.

For all beings:

May all who are grieving be met with kindness. May all who have lost be comforted. May all beings know that nothing loved is ever truly gone.

There is no wrong way to grieve. Say these words, or sit in silence. Both are a form of prayer.

Let yourself be held by this moment, exactly as it is.
